The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, has revealed that the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is making significant efforts to acquire modern fighter ground attack jets and helicopters to enhance its capabilities in tackling insecurity across the country.
Speaking at the 2025 Sallah Luncheon with troops of the Air Component, Operation KALACEN WUTA in Maiduguri on Wednesday, Abubakar emphasized the NAF’s commitment to improving its operational strategies to combat terrorism and other security challenges.
Represented by the Air Officer Commanding Tactical Air Command, Air Vice Marshal EO Ebiowe, Abubakar noted that additional military platforms would strengthen the force’s proactive approach to addressing security threats in the Northeast.
He stated, “As a key pillar of the nation’s security architecture, the Nigerian Air Force is continuously working to modernize and enhance its capabilities. In addition to the A-29 Super Tucanos, JF-17 Thunder, and T-129 ATAK Helicopters recently procured, we are making arrangements for the acquisition of more advanced Fighter Ground Attack jets and helicopters.”
He further highlighted the strategic importance of these new acquisitions in executing critical air power roles such as Combat Search and Rescue, Tactical Airlift, and Medical Evacuation. According to him, these efforts would ensure the force remains adequately equipped to safeguard the nation.
Beyond military hardware, Abubakar also reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to personnel development and capacity building. “We continue to invest in training, research, and the operationalization of indigenous technologies to ensure that our forces remain agile and capable of responding to any evolving security situation. This strategic transformation is in line with my command philosophy to ensure the NAF is prepared for the challenges of today and the future.”
The Nigerian Air Force reaffirmed its dedication to improving the welfare and operational efficiency of its personnel.
Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum, represented by the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Usman Tar, commended the NAF for its continued efforts in combating insurgency and providing humanitarian assistance, particularly during last year’s devastating floods.
“Your support is invaluable to our mission’s success. The host communities have also played a crucial role in providing credible intelligence and supporting our operations. I commend them for their cooperation, which greatly enhances the effectiveness of our missions,” he said.
