Rejoinder to the Open Letter by the Tangale Intelligentsia Movement (TIM)
April 7, 2025
To the Tangale Intelligentsia Movement (TIM),
Greetings to you all.
I have received and read with utmost attention the open letter you sent to me dated April 6, 2025. First, allow me to express my sincere appreciation for your continued engagement in the political discourse of our community and for your expressed concerns. It is always beneficial when our people remain vocal about matters affecting our collective future.
However, while I recognize the sentiments and the points raised, I must offer a respectful response to some of the observations and accusations made in your letter.
Let me start by affirming that the political wrangling between Mr. Thomas Umar Likka and myself is indeed regrettable, but it is one that I had hoped would have been resolved amicably. I have always believed in open, honest, and constructive dialogue. It is unfortunate that certain criticisms have been presented in ways that seem to be more about personal vendettas rather than genuine concerns about the people I represent.
It is essential to clarify that my primary focus has always been, and will always be, the welfare and progress of the people of Balanga-Billiri Federal Constituency. I do not seek control for its own sake, nor do I intend to undermine the unity of the Tangale people or any other ethnic group within my constituency. The assertion that I am trying to instill fear in our people is not only unfounded but is a misrepresentation of my actions and intentions. As a representative, I have always taken a stand for peace, unity, and cooperation. Political engagement can sometimes be contentious, but it should never devolve into divisiveness.
Your letter speaks of the overwhelming support I received from the Tangale people in the elections. I am grateful for that support, and I will continue to serve with the same diligence and commitment I pledged during my campaign. I have always emphasized that leadership is about service, not domination, and my actions thus far reflect this belief. If there are individuals who feel aggrieved or dissatisfied with my representation, I have always been open to hearing their concerns in a constructive manner. I welcome healthy criticism, as it strengthens democracy and promotes accountability.
Regarding the claim that I should refrain from defending myself in the face of accusations, I must point out that every citizen has the right to seek redress, including through the legal system. If I have been wrongfully accused or misrepresented, I will not shy away from using the proper channels to clear my name. This is not an undemocratic action, but rather a responsible and lawful course of action. It is important to remember that in any democracy, citizens and leaders alike have the right to fair and just treatment.
Finally, the message of your letter calls for me to “rethink my position.” I have always believed in acting in the best interest of the people, and my track record speaks for itself. I will continue to serve the Tangale people with integrity, but I will not be bullied or coerced into yielding to baseless accusations or unreasonable demands. I strongly believe that the unity of the Tangale people is paramount, and I am committed to ensuring that our collective interests are protected at all levels.
In conclusion, while I respect your views and your right to express them, I must assure you that I will not be deterred from my mission to serve my constituents and protect the dignity of the Tangale people. Let us continue to engage in dialogue that fosters peace and progress, not one that perpetuates unnecessary division.
Thank you for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Edison Chris Cavani
