A viral press release claiming that the Federal Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), has cancelled the 2025 May/June WASSCE examinations nationwide has been confirmed to be false.
The document, dated Saturday, July 19, 2025, and circulating widely on social media, alleged that all past and future WASSCE papers had been nullified due to widespread examination malpractice, AI-generated cheating, and compromised supervision.
It also claimed that over 480 exam centres were flagged, and that a new timetable would be released by August 5.
But WAEC, in an official reaction published by The Guardian, categorically dismissed the statement as “fake and fictitious.”
The examination body stated that the May/June 2025 exams concluded as scheduled, that script marking is currently ongoing, and that results are expected on or before August 4, 2025.
WAEC further clarified that no such entity as the “Federal Examinations Regulatory Board” exists under the Ministry of Education, nor was any investigative task force formed to cancel examinations, as alleged in the fabricated press release.
The Ministry of Education has not issued any directive related to cancellation, and no evidence supports the claim that a nationwide academic probe disrupted the examination process.
WAEC has since urged candidates, parents, and the general public to ignore the fake circular and rely solely on its official website, www.waecnigeria.org, and other verified news platforms for accurate information.
With misinformation spreading rapidly through social media, education authorities continue to caution the public against false updates designed to stir confusion, fear, or exploitation of students.
