Behind Nigeria’s triumphant campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) stands a man whose quiet brilliance has long shaped the nation’s football success, Coach Justin Pwanidi Madugu.
At 61, Madugu is more than just a seasoned coach; he is a tactical maestro whose deep understanding of the game, sharp strategic mind, and decades of experience have now culminated in his crowning achievement, leading the Super Falcons to their 10th continental title.
Born in Adamawa State, Madugu’s journey is a compelling blend of academic excellence and football mastery. He holds CAF A and B licenses, and is certified as an NFF/CAF coaching instructor.
His academic credentials include a Diploma in Library Science from Bayero University, Kano (1989), Advanced and Postgraduate Diplomas in Public Administration from Adamawa State Polytechnic, and dual Master’s degrees in Sports Psychology and Sports Management from El-Roi University, London.
For years, Madugu worked diligently behind the scenes, serving as assistant coach during Nigeria’s WAFCON victories in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2022.
His fingerprints are also on Nigeria’s performances at the FIFA U17 and U20 Women’s World Cups, as well as the senior FIFA Women’s World Cups in 2015 and 2019.
But 2024 marked his moment of elevation. Appointed as head coach of the Super Falcons, Madugu crafted a winning formula that blended tactical discipline with creative attacking play.
His calm demeanor, meticulous planning, and ability to read games set the tone for Nigeria’s successful campaign, restoring the team’s dominance on the African stage.
Beyond women’s football, Madugu’s coaching influence spans across Nigeria’s football ecosystem. He was assistant coach to the Super Eagles Team B from 2009 to 2010, led Nigeria’s mini-football team to qualify for the WMF Championship in Australia, and in 2019, clinched the WAFU Cup title with the Super Falcons.
Off the pitch, Madugu is a devoted family man, happily married with children, embodying a rare balance of humility, dedication, and professional excellence.
