The All Progressives Congress (APC) has won the Karim-Lamido 1 State Constituency by-election in Taraba State.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared the APC candidate, Abner Shittu, as the duly elected winner on Sunday.
INEC’s Returning Officer, Mustapha Sa’ad, announced that Shittu met all legal requirements and secured the highest number of votes.
Official results showed the African Democratic Congress (ADC) polling 2,069 votes, while the Social Democratic Party (SDP) recorded 106 votes.
The by-election followed the resignation of former lawmaker Mike Dio Jen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who vacated the seat after being appointed commissioner in the Taraba State Executive Council.
The victory is significant as Taraba is traditionally a PDP stronghold, making the APC’s triumph a symbolic breakthrough in the state’s political landscape.
Eye Reporters note that while a single by-election may not immediately alter Taraba’s partisan balance, it could serve as an early litmus test ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Analysts argue that with APC as the ruling party at the federal level, the control of state power and resources may weigh heavily on the political dynamics as the next nationwide polls draw closer.
