Borno State Governor, Prof. Babagana Umara Zulum, has announced a donation of N100 million to the Nigerian Army University, Biu (NAUB), to strengthen research and infrastructure at the institution.
Zulum made the pledge while hosting Vice Chancellor Prof. Lawan Bala Buratai and principal officers of the university at the Government House in Maiduguri.
He praised the ongoing efforts to provide a legislative framework for NAUB, stressing that it is vital for the university’s long-term sustainability.
The governor also revealed plans to award scholarships to indigent students across Borno’s 27 local government areas to study at the institution.
According to him, the initiative would be based on the university’s carrying capacity and would ensure inclusiveness in educational opportunities.
Zulum further promised to support the establishment of a College of Medical Sciences at NAUB to increase the number of doctors and frontline health workers in the state.
He emphasized that Borno’s three federal universities, University of Maiduguri, NAUB Biu, and the Federal University of Agriculture and Entrepreneurship Bama, must align their academic focus with the developmental needs of the state.
The governor said his administration would collaborate with the institutions through needs assessment to ensure maximum impact for citizens.
In his remarks, Vice Chancellor Prof. Buratai thanked the governor for his consistent support and requested additional sponsorship of Borno indigenes in Engineering and technical fields.
He also commended the ongoing construction of staff accommodation at the university as part of Zulum’s intervention in NAUB’s development.
Meanwhile, the governor restated his commitment to equitable distribution of projects while addressing the leadership of Biu Forum at the Government House.
He said investments in security, education, infrastructure, and social amenities are being made not for political patronage but for posterity.
The National Chairman of Biu Forum, Alhaji Mustapha Mohammed, acknowledged that Zulum’s administration had executed over 90 development projects in Biu Emirate alone.
He listed landmark interventions such as the Eye and Dental Hospital Biu, new LGA Secretariat, extensive road networks, mega schools, a vocational centre, primary healthcare facilities, and housing estates.
Eye Reporters report that Zulum’s gesture to NAUB underscores his broader strategy of using education as a stabilising tool in post-insurgency Borno.
By spreading scholarships across all LGAs, the governor is also neutralising sentiments of lopsided development, a recurring theme in Borno politics.
