The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has declared Monday, 25th August 2025, as the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal 1447AH.
This means the birthday of Prophet Muhammad, known as Eid al-Maulud, will be marked on Friday, 5th September 2025.
The declaration was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Sultanate Council Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu.
He explained that the new crescent was not sighted on Saturday, 23rd August 2025, which was the 29th of Safar.
As a result, Sunday, 24th August, completed 30 days of Safar, making Monday the first day of Rabi’ul Awwal.
The 12th day of this month is observed worldwide as the Prophet’s birthday. In Nigeria, it is usually declared a public holiday.
The Federal Government is expected to announce Friday, 5th September, as a national holiday for the celebration.
The Eid al-Maulud holiday is one of the most important dates on Nigeria’s Islamic calendar. It is marked with prayers, lectures, and processions across the country.
Muslims and the wider public now have clear dates to prepare for this year’s commemoration.
