Nigeria’s largest airline, Air Peace, will soon begin direct flights from Lagos to Sao Paulo, Brazil.
The announcement came during President Bola Tinubu’s state visit to Brazil, where he met with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
President Lula confirmed at a joint press conference that the Lagos–Sao Paulo route had been approved.
He said increasing direct connections between Nigeria and Brazil was vital to strengthening social and economic ties.
The deal followed an expanded bilateral meeting between both leaders at the Palácio do Planalto in Brasília.
Tinubu and Lula later witnessed the signing of several agreements and Memoranda of Understanding by ministers from both countries.
Nigeria’s Aviation Minister, Festus Keyamo, and Brazil’s Minister of Ports and Airports, Silvio Costa Filhos, signed a Bilateral Air Services Agreement.
Officials said the agreement would boost trade, tourism, and people-to-people connections between the two nations.
Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu and her Brazilian counterpart Mauro Vieira signed accords on diplomatic training and political consultations.
Nigeria’s Science Minister Geoffrey Nnaji and Brazil’s Luciana Santos also sealed a cooperation deal on biotechnology, space development, and digital transformation.
In agriculture, Nigeria’s Bank of Agriculture and Brazil’s National Bank for Economic and Social Development agreed to expand financing and joint projects.
The flurry of deals reflects Tinubu’s strategy to diversify Nigeria’s partnerships and strengthen South-South cooperation.
Analysts say the Lagos-Sao Paulo flight could make Nigeria a West African hub for Brazil-bound traffic, reducing costs and cutting dependence on European or Middle Eastern stopovers.
