The Benue State House of Assembly has cleared Dr. Timothy Yangien Ornguga as commissioner.
His confirmation came on Tuesday, less than 48 hours after the new Speaker, Alfred Berger, took charge.
Ornguga, a law lecturer at Benue State University, was earlier rejected under former Speaker Aondona Dajoh. Petitions from his students had raised questions about his character and integrity.
But on Tuesday, the same House made a U-turn. The new Speaker simply asked Ornguga to “take a bow and leave.” Lawmakers who opposed him last week stayed silent. There was no voice vote.
The confirmation came after Governor Hyacinth Alia appealed to the Assembly. He argued that Ornguga and another nominee, James Dwem, had not been convicted of any crime despite petitions against them.
The twist confirms earlier reports by Eye Reporters that politics, not principle, drove Dajoh’s removal. The former Speaker was suspended after resisting certain nominations. His replacement wasted no time in reversing his decision.
Governor Alia, a Catholic priest, was expected to bring godly leadership. Instead, under him, the Assembly has descended into intrigue and compromise. Integrity and public outcry no longer count.
The speed of Ornguga’s clearance shows how Nigerian politics works. Allegations are brushed aside. Dissenting voices are silenced. And the will of the people is ignored.
It is a sad commentary on a system where morality is optional and politics trumps principle.
