The Senate on Wednesday confirmed the nominations of new Service Chiefs forwarded by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The confirmation followed a formal request from the President, contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session.
Tinubu had last Friday announced a shake-up in the military hierarchy, replacing General Christopher Musa with General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff.
Major-General Waidi Shuaibu was appointed Chief of Army Staff, taking over from Lieutenant-General Olufemi Oluyede, who held the position after the demise of Lt Gen Lagbaja.
Air Vice Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke emerged as the new Chief of Air Staff, replacing Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar.
Rear Admiral Idi Abbas was named Chief of Naval Staff, succeeding Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, who had led the Navy under Tinubu’s first service lineup.
However, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, retained his position, signalling the President’s confidence in his handling of sensitive intelligence operations.
During Wednesday’s plenary, the Senate suspended its standing rules to admit the nominees for screening, underscoring the urgency attached to national security leadership.
The nominees were subsequently grilled by lawmakers on issues of internal security, counterterrorism, inter-agency coordination, and civil-military relations.
After the screening, the Senate unanimously confirmed their appointments, paving the way for a new era in the nation’s military leadership.
The confirmation marks Tinubu’s second major military reshuffle since assuming office, reflecting his desire to inject fresh strategic direction into Nigeria’s security architecture.
Eye Reporters notes that the appointments come at a time when the country faces persistent security challenges, including banditry, terrorism, and rising maritime threats.
Security analysts believe the new Service Chiefs will be under intense pressure to deliver quick, measurable results and justify the President’s confidence amid growing public demand for safety and stability.
