The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, is set to unveil a 60,000-litre solar-powered borehole in Mona Community, Cham District of Balanga Local Government Area, Gombe State.
The project is a Special Intervention Quick Impact Project initiated by the Chief of Naval Staff to provide immediate social benefits to the host community.
The water project is dedicated to honour a retiring illustrious son of the community, Rear Admiral Ayuba Chugali (Rtd).
The unveiling ceremony is scheduled to take place on Friday, December 19, 2025.
Eye Reporters gathered that the project is both a development intervention and a symbolic recognition of years of dedicated military service.
Vice Admiral Abbas and Rear Admiral Chugali are course mates of the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA Course 40.
Investigation by Eye Reporters revealed that the Navy Chief approved the project as a personal tribute to shared sacrifices endured during five demanding years of academic and military training at the NDA.
The solar-powered borehole, with a storage capacity of 60,000 litres, is expected to provide sustainable access to potable water for Mona Community and neighbouring settlements.
Water scarcity remains a major challenge in many rural communities in Gombe State, making the project a critical intervention.
Rear Admiral Chugali is widely known as a grassroots mobiliser who maintained close contact with his people throughout his years in active service.
He reportedly facilitated employment opportunities for several youths from the area into the Armed Forces, particularly the Nigerian Navy.
The retired senior officer is also credited with supporting the provision of basic social amenities to improve living conditions in the community.
Community members have described the project as a fitting honour for a son who consistently identified with their needs.
Eye Reporters notes that the initiative underscores the Nigerian Navy’s growing emphasis on civil-military relations through community-focused projects.
The intervention further reflects how Quick Impact Projects are being used to strengthen trust between the military and civilian populations.
For Mona Community, the unveiling represents both recognition of service and the delivery of a vital resource that will improve daily life.
