Prof Ihonvbere Heads Reps Committee To Oversee Rivers Emergency Rule
The House of Representatives has constituted an Ad-hoc Committee to oversee the implementation of Emergency Rule in Rivers State.
The Committee which will be inaugurated on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, will be chaired by the House Leader, Prof Julius Ihonvbere.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the House Spokesperson, Rep Akin Rotimi Jr, said the development is in line with the House resolve to “uphold the supremacy of the constitution and ensure that the extraordinary measures undertaken during the emergency period remains subject to Legislative oversight, guided by transparency, accountability and the best interest of the good people of Rivers State “.
“In line with Section 5 of the State Emergency (Rivers State) Proclamation, 2025, and pursuant to Section 11(4) of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the House has constituted a dedicated Ad-hoc Committee to monitor implementation and ensure that governance in the State remains within the bounds of constitutionalism and the rule of law”
He said one of the most consequential amendments to the emergency rule Proclamation by the President was the designation of the National Assembly as the oversight authority instead of the Federal Executive Council.
The Committee comprised19 members, with the Chief of Staff to the Speaker, Prof Jake Dan-Azumi as Secretary.
