The Nigerian Naval College (NNC), Ebubu-Eleme, came alive on Saturday, May 17, 2025, with a blend of military pomp and cultural display.
At the heart of the event was the time-honored “Beating of Retreat and Ceremonial Sunset” ceremony, marking the close of training for the DSSC 29 and SDPCT 24 intakes.
Traditionally rooted in naval heritage, the Beating of Retreat signals the end of the day’s duties and symbolizes peace and reflection within military ranks.
This year’s ceremony, however, carried deeper significance, as it marked the end of rigorous months of transformation from civilians to officers-in-waiting.
Rear Admiral HS Zego, Commandant of the college, stressed that the event was not just ceremonial but a rite of passage into the demanding life of service.
He acknowledged the pivotal support of Flag Officer Commanding Naval Training Command (NAVTRAC), Rear Admiral IM Albara; and the Chief of Naval Staff (CNS),Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla in shaping the cadets into competent officers.
The presence of Rear Admiral AA Gaya, Flag Officer Commanding Central Naval Command, added gravitas to the occasion.
His charge to the cadets to embrace loyalty, courage, integrity, and selfless service served as a moral compass for their future roles.
As the sun dipped and the ceremonial bonfire lit up the night, the fading light symbolized the end of training and the dawn of new responsibilities.
The event stood as a powerful reminder of the Navy’s commitment to tradition, discipline, and national service.
It also highlighted the Navy’s role in fostering unity through a display of cultural harmony among the cadets.
The beating retreat resonated with the rhythm of transition—honoring the past while marching boldly into the future.
