The Vice-Chancellor of Federal University Lokoja (FUL), Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, has been honoured with the Distinguished Alumnus Award by the University of Ilorin, his alma mater, in recognition of his exceptional contributions to academia and national development.
The award was conferred on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, during a grand investiture ceremony held to mark the 50th anniversary of the University of Ilorin.
The event, themed Award of Excellence and Investiture of Distinguished Alumni and Unilorin Ambassadors, brought together prominent alumni, scholars, and dignitaries from across Nigeria.
Professor Akinwumi, a respected historian and academic administrator, was celebrated for his “uncommon commitment” to the ideals of the institution widely revered as “Better By Far.”
His leadership at FUL has been marked by reform-focused policies and a drive for academic excellence, aligning with Unilorin’s long-standing tradition of producing transformational leaders in education and beyond.
Also honoured at the epoch-making ceremony were other notable alumni including JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede; former CBN Deputy Governor, Dr. Sarah Alade; former University of Abuja Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Rasheed Na’allah; and current FUTA Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, among others.
The recognition adds yet another feather to Professor Akinwumi’s academic cap and reinforces the University of Ilorin’s reputation for nurturing individuals who continue to shape Nigeria’s intellectual and administrative landscape.
The event underscored a broader narrative: that Nigerian universities, despite challenges, continue to produce alumni who drive institutional reform, national policy, and educational advancement.
From all of us at Eye Reporters, congratulations to Professor Akinwumi on this remarkable honour.
