In a powerful departure from past leadership practices, the National Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Ms. Grace Morenike Henry, today, Sunday, July 20, 2025, paid a heartfelt condolence visit to the family of the late Master Warrant Officer (MWO) Anthony Agbas, who passed away a day earlier.
The visit, described by veterans as “unprecedented,” marks the first time a sitting National Chairman of the Legion has personally reached out to the family of a deceased veteran, an act that many say signals a shift from years of leadership detachment.
Speaking during the visit, Ms. Henry expressed deep sorrow over the loss of MWO Agbas, whom she described as “a gallant soldier, a committed patriot, and a relentless advocate for the welfare of ex-servicemen.”
“We are not just mourning a veteran, we are mourning a pillar,” she said. “His selfless contributions to the cause of veterans’ welfare and unity will forever remain a beacon to those of us still in service to that cause.”
Ms. Henry assured the grieving family of the Legion’s full support during this difficult time, emphasizing that MWO Agbas’s legacy would be honored and preserved.
Her gesture has drawn wide commendation across veterans’ circles, with many noting that her action represents a much-needed break from the cold, bureaucratic silence that had characterized the Legion’s leadership in previous years.
For decades, bereaved families and struggling ex-servicemen were left largely unattended by the institution meant to protect their interests.
Veteran stakeholders have hailed Ms. Henry’s leadership as a turning point, compassionate, proactive, and people-focused.
As the Nigerian veteran community mourns the passing of one of its most revered voices, Ms. Henry’s visit has rekindled hope that the Legion may finally be returning to its core mission: service to those who once served.
