The Gombe State House of Assembly on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, passed the much-anticipated bill for the creation of 13 new Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).
The bill sailed through plenary after the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, presented by its Deputy Chairman and Chief Whip, Hon. Musa Buba.
Lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favour of the legislation, with a two-thirds majority endorsing the committee’s recommendations after robust stakeholder consultations and public hearing sessions.
The Assembly leadership described the passage as a decisive step toward strengthening grassroots governance, expanding representation, and accelerating service delivery in the state.
Speaker Rt. Hon. Abubakar Muhammad Luggerewo lauded members for their commitment to rural development, noting that the new LCDAs would bridge the gap between government and the people.
Eye Reporters, however, caution that while the move is a bold statement of intent, its success will depend on adequate funding, staffing, and transparent implementation to avoid becoming another layer of bureaucracy.
The bill now awaits the assent of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, whose approval will determine how quickly the newly created LCDAs can begin operation.
Observers say the development positions Gombe among northern states pushing the boundaries of local governance reforms, but its long-term impact will be measured by tangible improvements in citizens’ daily lives.
