The College of Postgraduate Studies, Federal University Lokoja (FUL), has inaugurated its College Quality Assurance Committee to safeguard standards in postgraduate education.
Provost of the College, Professor Gbenga Solomon Ibileye, charged members to approach the assignment with diligence, fairness, and a deep sense of purpose.
He stressed that the success of postgraduate education rests not only on the brilliance of students and faculty but also on the systems of quality put in place to sustain standards.
Ibileye described the role of the Committee as noble yet demanding, urging members to see themselves as architects of the future of postgraduate education in the university.
He said the Committee’s work should inspire confidence in FUL’s postgraduate programmes locally, nationally, and globally.
The Quality Assurance Committee is chaired by Prof. Rafiu Ademola Olatoye, with Prof. Jacqueline Azumi Badaki, Prof. Inyokwe S. Otinche, Prof. Ifeyinwa G. Okolo, Dr. Aisha Abimbola Adaranijo, and Mr. Abdullahi Ibrahim Baba as members.
Its terms of reference include monitoring course delivery, evaluating supervision quality, strengthening research ethics, and conducting internal quality audits.
The Committee will also review existing programmes, gather feedback from students and staff, and recommend improvements to the Provost and College Board.
Analysts say the move comes at a critical time when postgraduate education in Nigeria faces challenges such as weak supervision, delayed graduations, plagiarism, and poor funding.
They caution, however, that such committees in Nigerian universities often risk becoming ceremonial, producing reports that gather dust instead of driving reforms.
Eye Reporters report that for FUL, the challenge will be to ensure that the Committee’s work translates into visible changes in postgraduate training, timely graduations, and stronger research outputs.
If achieved, observers note, the initiative could position FUL as a model in entrenching global best practices rather than merely following bureaucratic routines.
