The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise will run for one full year and end on August 30, 2026.
The announcement was contained in a statement on Monday signed by National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun.
The exercise combines both online pre-registration and in-person registration at INEC offices across the country.
According to the commission, the online pre-registration portal was launched on August 18, 2025.
As of Sunday, August 24, 2025, a total of 1,379,342 Nigerians had pre-registered within just one week.
The gender breakdown shows 661,846 men, representing 47.96 percent, and 717,856 women, making up 52.04 percent.
Young people between the ages of 18 and 34 constitute the majority with 860,286 registrants, or 62.37 percent.
Students accounted for 374,534 registrants, which is 27.15 percent of the total.
Persons with disabilities made up 27,089 registrants, representing 1.96 percent.
Physical registration at INEC’s 811 state and local government offices nationwide began on Monday.
The commission said the dual approach will allow those who started online to complete their registration and those who prefer in-person registration to do so directly.
INEC advised eligible citizens to register early and avoid last-minute rush close to the deadline.
Olumekun warned that past experience shows registration centres become overwhelmed in the final weeks of such exercises.
He stressed that the registration is strictly for Nigerian citizens aged 18 and above who have not previously registered.
The commission reiterated that double or multiple registrations remain illegal and punishable under the law.
INEC also clarified that the CVR period allows voters to transfer registration between states or replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards.
The commission appealed for compliance and urged Nigerians to take advantage of the one-year window to register ahead of the 2027 general elections.
